Personal, social and health education

Citizen.JPG

At Somerville Primary School, we teach Personal, Social and Health Education as a whole-school approach to underpin children’s development as people and because we believe that this also supports a child’s learning capacity. We want our children to grow and develop in a safe and nurturing environment where they are able to express themselves articulately, gain a further understanding of themselves as unique people and build resilience. Somerville Primary School encourages children to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

The Jigsaw Programme offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through Scheme of Work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area. Further information regarding this can be found below.

This also supports the “Personal Development” and “Behaviour and Attitude” aspects required under the Ofsted Inspection Framework, as well as significantly contributing to the school’s Safeguarding and Equality Duties, the Government’s British Values agenda and the SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural) development opportunities provided for our children.

At Somerville the Primary School uses the Jigsaw programme to support us in our teaching of PSHE aspects including Relationships and Health Education as compulsory subjects, along with age appropriate Sex Education as recommended by the Department for Education.

The Jigsaw Programme offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through Scheme of Work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in all aspects of this vital curriculum area. At Somerville we have a statutory responsibility to safeguard our pupils (Keeping Children Safe in Education, DfE, 2020) and to uphold the Equality Act (2010).The Jigsaw Programme supports all of these requirements and has children’s wellbeing at its heart.

If you require any further information please contact the school office and you can speak to the PSHE lead in the school.
