Design and Technology offers children a chance to use critical thinking and creativity within a defined purpose and tangible outcome. Through a variety of creative and practical activities, pupils are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in a process of designing and making, ensuring they are fully able to access their next stage of learning and to develop personal interests and passions within the subject. They will be given opportunities to develop these and combine them with knowledge and skills from other subjects, particularly Maths, Science, Computing and Art.
Children are encouraged to look at past and present technology and its impact on daily life and the wider world. Emphasis will be on the ‘how’ children learn, developing their independence and creativity within the subject. While engaging in a variety of projects, they will deepen their understanding of the world around them and learn skills which will not only prepare them for the next stages of their education, but also make them ready to become healthy and resourceful adults. We want to lay the foundations at the Primary School Phase to develop a love of product design and engineering to give our children aspirations for their future careers.
Throughout their DT journey at Somerville children will be working as designers, makers and chefs.
