Coronavirus January 2021– school closure to vast majority of pupils

We have been instructed to close Somerville Primary School to almost all children until further notice. Somerville Nursery School will remain open.

The closure of the Primary School is to reduce the spread of the virus as much as possible.

As advised by the government, we will do all we can to stay open with a skeleton staff for a restricted amount of children of critical workers (CLICK HERE FOR A FULL LIST) and those considered to be vulnerable by Somerville Federation.

If you believe you are a critical worker and need your child to be in school to support you in attending work during school hours then please contact the school office by email. All critical worker places have now been filled by the Primary School.

Please understand that there is a limit on the number of children the school can accept on a daily basis due to staffing limitations. Children in school will only be completing the same work which will be provided remotely for those children learning from home.

If your child is in the critical worker group and can be accommodated at home, they should remain at home in the first instance as this is the safest place for them and your family.

Children who do not fall into one of these two groups (Critical worker or vulnerable children) should remain at home with appropriate care.

Please bear in mind that this childcare provision for Critical workers and vulnerable children will remain subject to the school having sufficient staff available to enable it to remain open.

Please note that this is a national closure – so while it is a challenging situation, you are not alone.

What we’ll continue doing while your child is at home

Your child’s learning is of course important to us, so we’ll continue to help your child to learn by providing remote learning. If your child is in need of a device (chromebook or iPad) to work on at home we have a limited number of chromebooks and iPads available to support their learning from home. We already have a list of who will need a device from those who previously completed the online form and from your discussions with your child's class teacher at Parents Evening in the Autumn term. These devices are limited and have been prioritised. However contact the school office by email if you still require a device.

As well as the remote learning you may also wish to access the working from home page by clicking here, this page is updated whenever new resources have been planned. We are also encouraging parents who may wish to share their working from home on a new twitter feed for our school if you include the following word and hastag, staff will also be able to share ideas and activities should they wish using the same twitter feed. #SomervillePrimHomeLearning

We have been assured that the government have also requested television broadcasting companies to broadcast a range of educational programmes on the television during the day as well as age specific educational programmes on bbc iplayer.

We have also set up email addresses for the primary school aged children for you to contact the year group teachers, a teacher will reply to these emails if they are well and able to do so. This email function is to give you support for your child working from home or they are having difficulty logging into particular software. Any misuse of these email addresses will result in the email account being blocked.  Each email address will start F2Year@, Year1@, Year2@ etc For instance

Please email the school office with only urgent messages, emails will be monitored daily during the working week but only responded to if it is considered urgent. We will keep you informed by the school website, text or email of any further updates.

If your child is entitled to free school meals we have now organised vouchers for the majority of children not able to attend school.

We understand that this latest news will have an impact on you and your family and it’s far from ideal but this is a national emergency. We will continue to keep in touch with any updates as the situation develops.

Thank you again for your continued support, and we will be in touch with more information when we can. This is such a challenging time for us all and we wish you and your families good health in the difficult weeks ahead.
